What is the difference between AP and IB coursework?
While both AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) programs are rigorous, college-level paths that strengthen a student’s academic profile, they differ in structure, style, and focus.
AP courses are subject-specific and flexible. Students can choose which AP classes to take based on interest or strength, and each course ends with a standardized exam. AP is popular in the United States and focuses on mastering academic content and test-taking skills. It’s ideal for students who want to challenge themselves in specific subjects while receiving college credit.
IB courses are part of a globally recognized, comprehensive program that emphasizes critical thinking, research, and writing across disciplines. Students enrolled in the full IB Diploma Programme take courses across six subject areas, complete a Theory of Knowledge course, write an Extended Essay, and participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) projects. IB assessments combine internal coursework with external exams and focus more on analysis, global context, and holistic learning.
Essentially:
-
AP is flexible, content-focused, and exam-driven
-
IB is structured, globally minded, and writing-intensive
